New York based bassist, composer, and improviser, Shawn Lovato commissioned me to design artwork for his new album, Biotic. Staying true to the album’s title and themes, and drawing on a process similar to my design for Shawn’s 2017 album, Cycles of Animation, I found inspiration in the flora of my backyard.
I collected a dozen plant specimens, scanned them, and began exploring the visual language through colour, texture, and form. The images below show a selection of examples from the initial exploration.
Once the visual language was finalized, I began exploring typography. Similar to Cycles of Animation, the type and layout was designed to support the image-based focal point of the artwork. I went with Rubik Mono One, an open-source typeface whose blocky form beautifully complemented the free-flowing nature of the composition in the artwork.
The primary artwork then became the catalyst for the rest of the rollout, including cover art for three singles, motion graphics, and CD packaging.
