The exhibition Trace/s examines the history of slavery in Brooklyn through a combination of artwork, historical records and celebration of today's Black genealogy researchers.

The visual identity and design system was inspired by the ovular shape of the Homestead of Cornelius Van Brunt, one of the prominent pieces in Trace/s. The ovular system is used to house both text and images. Open-source typefaces Cormorant Bold and Lora reflect the exhibition’s historical essence. Warm tones and a pop of indigo complement the space’s look and feel. Elevations by Thiago Eichner.

Trace/s opened to the public on January 30, 2025 and has received tremendous reception thus far. It is on display at the Lobby Gallery at the Center for Brooklyn History until August 30, 2025.

A big thank you to the Center for Brooklyn History team for their support and feedback throughout this project.
